Diamond Hitch Outfitters have raised horses for our outfitting business since 1974, and mules since 1983. We breed and train stock that work best for our riding and packing. For us that means a trustworthy disposition, good size, a fast smooth walk, endurance, and conformation that is pleasing to look at and effective for carrying a load. For our business we need animals that we can trust with our guests, they need to walk out, and be able to withstand the long hours and heavy loads that our terrain and operation require.
Our mares are chosen for size, disposition, and conformation. We started with quarter horse, Belgian and Percheron. We have added Montana Travelr and Tennesee Walker to our breeding.
The Montana Travler breed was started in the 1930’by Tom Eaton of Nye Montana . He bred for, disposition, depth, good feet, endurance and a running walk gait. His breeding mix included Hambletonian, American Saddlebred, Morgan, Austrian Thoroughbred, and Tennessee Walker. The foundation sire from this breeding was the outstanding sorrel stallion, “Montana Travler”.
Most of our horses and mules now have the Montana Travlr and Tennesee Walker cross. Some we work into our string and some we sell. All the animals get the same training to prepare them for their job. We are after a dependable comfortable to ride horse that is versatile enough for the mountains, the show arena or urban trail. They need to be more than just controllable; we want control of all four feet.
In our business mules are a natural, with their strength, their disposition, their surefootedness, longer using life wih less care. We have learned the hard way that early training and the right breeding are critical in how a mule turns out. Having our own Jack and breeding the right mares have given us an exceptional string of mules.
If you are looking for a horse or mule with the same qualities we look for, the disposition, the walk, the back and appearance, we invite you to check out what we have. Usually we have everything from mares with colts to mature, tested veterans; typically we have younger animals. If we have one you like, we will work with you and your horse or mule to develop an effective and enjoyable team.
